Auntie B did any work she could find, mostly on farms. She did house work. At Christmas she plucked turkeys. She had a little mongrel terrier dog who loved to be with her. One day she rode off alone on her bike, having shut the dog in the house. After a while she heard panting and found Toby was chasing her. The house walls were made of cob, a soft mixture of straw ,clay, water, and lime. Toby had scratched a hole and squeezed through such was his desire to be with Auntie B.
Later Auntie B moved to a village five miles from home to be a housekeeper for two men who had a coal delivery business. Some people speculated on the chances of her marrying one of them but I think she decided they were both too mean with their money.
