Today I met with a friend who was at university with me back in the late 60's. We hadn't seen each other for about twenty years and if we had not seen our photos on Facebook we might not have recognised each other. She had her husband with her. We spent a happy time reminiscing but more than that speaking about our lives today. I have another friend who went to school with me. I see her about twice or three times a year. We usually have lunch together. It is God who places people in our lives and for a purpose. Often we don't know what that purpose is. I have other friends who live in my village who went to school with me but I hardly ever see them. I used to go to school reunions but couldn't help feeling that the really interesting people were too busy getting on with their lives to come! For instance a boy in our class went off to Hawaii to study marine biology. I looked him up on the internet and he's still there. I don't think he will come to a school reunion anytime soon.
I have written in previous posts about disasters. In the case of Concorde, decisions by people, plus other factors were directly to blame for the event. In the case of the Penlee disaster it may have been avoided if someone had made a better choice in the time beforehand and as a consequence brave men and the ship's crew and the captain and his family died. 9/11 was certainly the result of wicked men committing a terrorist act, but even in this there was heroism notably by another Cornish man, Rick Rescorla who helped many to safety and left it too late to help himself. In situations like this we see what the human spirit is capable of both good and evil. What of disasters that come on people because of the earth restless movement of tectonic plates. Often people live near volcanoes because the land is rich and fertile and they have the chance of a better life there when the volcano is resting. We cannot blame them for that but sometimes people become complacent...
