We were in St Petersburg in early July the time of the White Nights. We were further north than I had ever been and so experienced the daylight hours being extended far more than we were used to. The photo here was taken at about 11.15p.m. and the sun was only just setting. When we looked out of our cabin window at 2a.m. the light was already growing. There are other places on Earth that experience this phenomenon but St Petersburg is the biggest city that experiences this.
The streets bustle with people day and night and street lights are not needed. Of course it is a very different story in the winter. As we travelled on and reached the more southerly Moscow we noticed that the daylight hours there were much the same as at home.
