I'm back

It's certainly time I posted here again. So what have I been doing? Well I've completed more than 50 lenses on Squidoo and become a Giant Squid. After that I went on holiday. Also I had a disagreement with my Faith and worship tutor because he gave me a low mark. Our problem is that he is a first time tutor so neither of us really knew if he was marking correctly or not. However an experienced tutor took a look at my work and backed up the tutor, so I had to humble myself and re-do it. My problem is more essay technique than lack of knowledge. the original mark was 42 now it is 54. I am quite content with that and hoping for better things in future as I pick up the essay technique of answering what the question asks.

I have taken an all-age service since my last post and enjoyed it very much and it has been a great help with Faith and worship as this was the topic of the unit 8 assignment.I am now beginning to prepare for a Remembrance Day service, first of all asking the steward what sort of service they like and if any members have links to people lost in wars, past and present.Whatever one thinks of war we need to think of the needs of those involved, those who have lost loved ones and those who have been disastrously injured in body and mind.

  1. Good to have you back! Sorry to hear about your mark and it is difficult when you think you have done a good job and someone else thinks it was not too good.
I do think that tutors have a difficult job because they may be inclined to be either over or under generous in marking and on odd occasions I have given some extra marks which has moved a student up a level.
I suppose one of the things about marking is that like services that we assess much of it is subjective. There are guidelines of course but again these can be open to interpretation and given the current faith and worship course I am not sure how this could be worked around. I suppose one way to ensure we all mark the same would be exam type papers with multiple choice questions but how boring that would be.
I have marked some excellent work during the last three years and have especially enjoyed the variety in the worship related assignments.
Keep up the good work and I look forward to hearing that you have passed section A. You never know I might mark you next lot of work - I have 14 peoples section B work at the moment from opposite ends of the British Isles - Scotland - London.

  2. Thank you for your encouragement FP, it is much appreciated. I seem to have got over the hiccough and to have learnt something.

Why do many disasters happen?

I have written in previous posts about disasters. In the case of Concorde, decisions by people, plus other factors were directly to blame for the event.  In the case of the Penlee disaster it may have been avoided if someone had made a better choice in the time beforehand and as a consequence brave men and the ship's crew and the captain and his family died. 9/11 was certainly the result of wicked men committing a terrorist act, but even in this there was heroism notably by another Cornish man, Rick Rescorla who helped many to safety and left it too late to help himself.  In situations like this we see what the human spirit is capable of both good and evil. What of disasters that come on people because of the earth restless movement of tectonic plates.  Often people live near volcanoes because the land is rich and fertile and they have the chance of a better life there when the volcano is resting.  We cannot blame them for that but sometimes people become complacent...

Optimism conquering experience

I watched The Detectorists tonight. I have not watched it before. It is about a group of people who use detecting equipment to discover old coins and other things of archeological interest. This was the last in the series and had a bitter sweet feel to it.  One of the main characters asked,"Why do we do it?" and the other replied,"This is the nearest you will ever get to time travel." You have to be an optimist to do metal detecting.  There is always the attraction of making a big find or an important discovery.  Among all the tin cans and coat hangers found there is the hope of a Saxon hoard, or Roman gold. Optimism keeps them going.

Always wanting something new

Every time I take a few days off from my blog my ratings slump.  Very rarely do people go back into my old posts and read again.  This is a typical attitude of the human heart, always wanting something different.  At this time of year we should not be greedily wondering want new thing we will be getting for Christmas.  Instead we should be looking at the old, old story, which is ever new of a baby who amazingly was God incarnate, God's gift to those who will put there trust in this one who was to grow up to give His life for His people.  Set aside the controversy over whether December 25th is the actual date of His birth.(Shepherds do not keep their sheep out at night in Israel in December.) and set aside time to think about the fact that He did come and ponder if He came to set you free and if your answer is ,"Yes," He will make you free indeed.
